Immunofixation Electrophoresis Serum
Understanding Immunofixation Electrophoresis Serum
What is Immunofixation Electrophoresis Serum?
Immunofixation Electrophoresis (IFX) Serum test measures the levels of specific immunoglobulins (antibodies or proteins produced by the immune system that fight infections), including IgG, IgM, and IgA present in the blood. By identifying specific antibodies, this test helps detect, manage, or monitor plasma cell dyscrasia or multiple myeloma. You may need this test if you experience symptoms such as unexplained fatigue or weight changes, bone pain, loss of appetite, etc. Additionally, anemia, frequent infections, proteinuria, and elevated calcium levels in the blood may also be noted. This test may also help in monitoring treatment efficacy or disease recurrence if you have previously undergone treatment for multiple myeloma or other similar conditions.
What is Immunofixation Electrophoresis Serum used for?
You should get this test done if you have symptoms of plasma cell disorders like
• Bone pains
• Back pain, especially around the ribs
• Frequent Infection
• Pathological fractures
