MRI Cervical Spine

Also known as Cervical MRI scan, MRI of the cervical spine
This test is for
Male, Female
Test Preparation
  1. At the time of the MRI you might be asked to remove any metallic coins, jewelry, metal wrist watches, metallic keys, dentures or hearing aids as the MRI uses strong magnetic fields
  2. Tell your radiologist if you have metallic implants like pacemaker, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, neuro-stimulator, surgical staples/clips or drug implants
  3. Pregnant women should inform their doctor about their pregnancy before going for MRI

Understanding MRI Cervical Spine

What is MRI Cervical Spine?

The Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Cervical Spine test is a highly advanced, non-invasive, painless imaging technique that uses magnetic and radio waves to create detailed images of the neck’s soft tissues, spinal cord, and nerves.

The MRI Cervical Spine test provides clear and detailed images of the part of the spine that runs through the neck area (cervical spine), including the spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and vertebrae. As opposed to a CT scan or X-ray, there is no risk of radiation exposure associated with a cervical spine MRI.

The spinal column supports your head and protects the spinal cord. This is the main structure which links the network of nerves throughout your body. MRI allows this column to be viewed in 3D (3-Dimensional), as well as the ligaments, tendons, nerves, muscles, and blood supply that surround it.

The MRI of the cervical spine proves beneficial for individuals experiencing symptoms such as numbness of the arms or neck pain, stiffness and reduced range of movements. It helps detect various medical conditions, including aneurysms, tumors, bulging or herniated discs, and autoimmune disorders.

This test utilizes advanced magnetic resonance technology in either open MRI (less confining) or closed MRI (high resolution) systems to provide precise imaging of the cervical spine.

Before undergoing an MRI cervical spine test, remove metal objects like metallic coins, jewelry, metal wrist watches, metallic keys, dentures or hearing aids as the MRI uses strong magnetic fields and can pull on any metallic objects. Wear loose-comfortable clothing without metal fasteners. Inform your doctor about your pregnancy, medical history, allergies, medications, pacemaker, metal implants etc before going for an MRI test. If you are either too claustrophobic or overweight to undergo a traditional closed MRI, discuss sedation or open MRI options with your doctor.

Interpretation of test results requires expert guidance, therefore do not self-medicate solely based on these test results and always consult the doctor for proper understanding of your test results.

What is MRI Cervical Spine used for?

The  MRI Cervical Spine test is done:

  • To investigate the cause of persistent or severe neck pain, shoulder, or arm pain that does not get better after treatment.
  • When there are symptoms like neck pain along with leg weakness, numbness, or other symptoms.
  • To evaluate conditions like pinched nerve, herniated discs, or spinal stenosis.
  • To detect trauma, fractures, or ligament damage in the neck area.
  • To detect inflammation, tumors, or other abnormalities affecting the spinal cord.
  • To help diagnose age-related conditions like arthritis or spondylosis in the spine.
  • To diagnose birth defects of the spine.
  • To detect lesions like multiple sclerosis (MS) or changes related to MS in the cervical spine.
  • To help doctors plan neck or spine surgery.

What does MRI Cervical Spine measure?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. The MRI Cervical Spine test provides detailed images of the neck’s soft tissues, spinal cord, nerves, and vertebrae. It measures the alignment of the spine, detects any nerve compression or  damage of the spine, and finds out conditions like herniated discs, tumors, inflammation, or degenerative changes. This non-invasive scan can also reveal the cause of neck pain, nerve-related symptoms, or spinal injuries, helping diagnose potential spinal abnormalities and guide care strategies.

Answers to Patient Concerns & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about MRI Cervical Spine

Frequently Asked Questions about MRI Cervical Spine

Q. Is the MRI Cervical Spine test safe?

MRI tests are generally very safe. They not only avoid the risk of being exposed to radiation, but they also pose very little risk of any side effects. However, in people with a history of kidney disease, it’s recommended to have a plan with your healthcare provider in case the use of intravenous (IV) contrast is needed. If IV contrast is necessary to help your provider detect certain conditions, keep in mind that very rarely people can have an allergic reaction to gadolinium (the contrast dye).

Q. How long does the MRI Cervical Spine test take?

The MRI Cervical Spine test may last as long as it takes for the radiologist to get clear images of the intended areas.

Q. Why might I need the MRI Cervical Spine test?

Your doctor may recommend MRI Cervical Spine test if you are experiencing symptoms such as numbness of the arms or neck pain, stiffness and reduced range of movements.

Q. What should I expect during the MRI?

During the MRI, you will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. The procedure is painless, but you may need to lie still for sometime while images are taken. You may hear loud tapping or thumping sounds.

Q. Will I feel any pain during the MRI Cervical Spine test?

The MRI exam causes no pain. You will need to lie still as too much movement can blur MRI images and cause errors.

Q. Do I need a doctor's prescription for the MRI Cervical Spine test?

Yes, a doctor's prescription is typically required.

Q. Can I bring a family member or friend with me during the MRI Cervical Spine test?

Policies may vary across diagnostics centers, however, usually a family member can stay in the waiting area during the procedure.

Q. What if I’m claustrophobic?

If you have claustrophobia, inform your doctor/technician before the test. They may suggest solutions like medication/sedation to help you relax, or they might use an open MRI machine, which provides a less confined space.

Q. What is the difference between open and closed MRI?

Open MRI machines have a wider opening and are less confining, making them better for claustrophobic individuals. Closed MRI machines have a narrow design and usually provide higher resolution images, which can be better for detailed examinations. The choice depends on medical needs and individual comfort.

Q. Can I have the MRI test if I’m pregnant?

MRI is generally considered safe during pregnancy as MRI uses radio waves and magnetic fields to create images, and does not use radiation.
