Understanding MRI Spine Sacrum and Coccyx (Plain)
What is MRI Spine Sacrum and Coccyx (Plain)?
MRI Spine Sacrum and Coccyx (Plain) is an imaging test that focuses on the coccyx (tail bone) and the sacrum (a shield-shaped bone located at the end of the spine). This lab test uses powerful radio and magnetic waves to produce 3D images of the targeted area. The procedure is likely to take around 40-60 minutes.
If you have had back pain (coccydynia) for a considerable time, and your doctor suspects that the cause is more severe than muscle strain, they may recommend the test to identify the root cause of the pain.
If your age is more than 70 years, you have an ongoing degenerative condition, or you have had a history of fracture of the tailbone or sacrum, your doctor may recommend this test.
What is MRI Spine Sacrum and Coccyx (Plain) used for?
- To find the cause of lower back pain or coccydynia (pain in the coccyx) that lasts for a long time
- To look for any injury or fracture of the sacrum or tailbone
- To diagnose any suspected abnormal growths (tumors like sacrococcygeal chordoma), birth defects, infections, inflammation or degenerative diseases of the sacrococcygeal junction
