Understanding PET CT Scan (Whole Body)
What is PET CT Scan (Whole Body)?
A positron emission tomography (PET) CT scan is used to visualize the activity of body organs and tissues. A safe radioactive material/tracer is introduced into the body which accumulates in various body parts according to the chemical activity. After visualizing under a PET scanner the doctor is able to map the diseased organs as bright spots because of excessive accumulation of tracer. PET scan is generally recommended to detect cancer. It is also advised to diagnose certain brain and heart disorders.
PET scans shows metabolic changes occurring at the cellular level in an organ or tissue unlike other CT scans. It makes PET Scan a prompt and definitive diagnostic technique as diseases often begins at a cellular level.
