Understanding PET CT Scan Whole Body PSMA
What is PET CT Scan Whole Body PSMA?
A positron emission tomography (PET) scan traces the radioactive compound as it passes through the body. PET, along with computed tomography (CT), is used to capture images of the whole body. A PSMA-PET scan identifies the areas of the body where the PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) is, which points to the presence of prostate cancer cells. It, therefore, identifies the spread of cancer. The radioactive tracer is taken intravenously.
The total time for a PSMA PET scan is about two hours. Fast for 2 hours before the procedure. The radioactive tracer is given in minimal amounts, and no side effects have been reported. The FDA recently approved it after years of clinical research.
