Understanding Pulmonary Function Tests at Center

What is Pulmonary Function Tests at Center?

The Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) is a non-invasive breathing test  to assess the health and function of the lungs. The test measures various aspects of lung function, including lung volume, airflow and gas exchange, providing insights into your respiratory health.

The Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is used to evaluate the performance of lungs by measuring various aspects of respiratory function. It plays a key role in diagnosing, managing, and monitoring conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other pulmonary disorders. This test evaluates lung volumes, airflow rates, and gas exchange efficiency, providing valuable information on lung health and aids in formulating effective treatment plans.

For a PFT, individuals breathe into a spirometer, which measures the volume and speed of air inhaled and exhaled. The test typically assesses air flow (known as spirometry), lung volume measurement (to determine total lung capacity), and diffusion capacity (to evaluate gas exchange efficiency). For this test, individuals may need to inhale medication or follow specific breathing patterns for reliable test results.

A pulmonary function test is usually performed when there are symptoms suggestive of a lung problem, such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, or abnormal chest X-rays. It is also conducted as part of routine check-ups for individuals with known lung conditions or those who are at higher risk for lung diseases due to factors like smoking or occupational exposures. Additionally, PFTs are sometimes performed before major surgeries to assess a patient’s lung health and readiness for anesthesia.

For this test, you may need to refrain from eating a heavy meal, drinking alcohol or smoking for several hours before the test, as these factors can affect your lung function. It’s also important to avoid using inhalers or other respiratory medications before the test, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. It is also advised  to wear loose-fitting clothes that can help you breathe more freely during the test. Additionally, avoid exercising for 30 minutes before the test.

Interpretation of PFT results requires professional expertise. Therefore, it is essential to consult your doctor to understand the implications of your PFT findings.
