These medicines are types of diuretics. They are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce edema (swelling over the whole body due to excess water) in people having heart failure, liver or kidney disease. Some medicines of this group may also be used to treat cerebral edema (accumulation of excessive fluid in the brain).
