Test Preparation

Do not eat or drink anything other than water for 8-12 hours before the test
Inform your doctor and technician if you have any stents, implants or pacemakers in your body.
Depending on the area to be imaged, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown at the time of the scan.
You may have to remove your jewelry and any metal objects which might interfere with the image.
Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.

What is BARIUM ENEMA?

The Barium Enema test is an imaging procedure that can detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon). This is also called colon X-ray. It is performed by inserting liquid barium solution through the anus and taking a photograph of the colon and rectum using X-Rays. Barium highlights the areas in colon to create clearer pictures. These pictures are then visually assessed to identify abnormalities.
