Bile Salts
Understanding Bile Salts
What is Bile Salts?
Bile salts are produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. During the process of digestion, bile salts are released into the intestine to emulsify fat so that they can be excreted easily. Later, in the absorptive phase of digestion, approximately 90% of bile salts are reabsorbed. The serum bile salts test is a simple blood test that measures the levels of bile salts in the blood.
Bile salts are a good indicator of liver health, and their levels in the serum are tested to qualitatively measure the function of the liver. The levels are relatively low in healthy people, and elevated serum levels indicate liver diseases like jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis, cholestasis or other syndromes associated with digestion impairment. Take the test now and prevent damage to digestive organs.
What is Bile Salts used for?
Bile salts are tested in case symptoms of jaundice appear. These include yellowing of the skin, under nails, whites of the eyes, pale stool and dark colored urine, combined with intense itching.
Interpreting Bile Salts results
Interpretations
Normal result of bile salt test is <10 micromolar/L. Higher result indicates positive in case of obstructive jaundice or liver disease with jaundice like condition.
