Know more about this test

The Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel is a group of blood tests that check for specific IgG antibodies in the blood. These antibodies show if your body reacts to certain allergens you inhale. This panel helps doctors detect if you have hypersensitive pneumonitis, a lung problem caused by repeated exposure to environmental allergens.

Understanding Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel

Hypersensitive pneumonitis (HP), or extrinsic allergic alveolitis, is an inflammatory lung condition. It occurs due to repeated exposure to environmental allergens (antigens) such as mold, fungal spores, bird droppings, and other organic particles. This repeated exposure can cause abnormal immune reactions, resulting in inflammation in the alveoli (small air spaces of the lungs) and impairing the function of the lungs.

The Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel tests for certain immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against a variety of common allergens associated with hypersensitivity pneumonitis. These include:

  • Penicillium chrysogenum: a widespread indoor mold that grows in moist places.
  • Cladosporium herbarum: a common airborne fungus responsible for respiratory allergies.
  • Mucor racemosus: an occupational HP-related soil-borne mold.
  • Alternaria alternata: a fungal species of allergen that worsens respiratory conditions.
  • Aspergillus fumigatus: a fungus responsible for allergic and hypersensitive lung disease.
  • Pigeon serum proteins, feathers, and droppings: common allergens in individuals exposed to birds, frequently present in "bird fancier's lung.

This panel is tailored to identify sensitization to particular environmental antigens, helping diagnose HP. It is particularly beneficial for those with symptoms like chronic cough, dyspnea, and fatigue, especially if they are exposed to birds, mold, or dust at work or home. Doctors may also order this test for individuals who have recurrent pneumonia or pneumonitis. The panel is also vital for diagnosing diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD) when HP is suspected. Early diagnosis is necessary to prevent severe complications such as lung scarring (pulmonary fibrosis) or compromised lung function due to restrictive lung disease.

No special preparation is required for the test. Additionally, patients should inform their doctor about any medications being taken or any recent infections, as these can affect results.

Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methodology and laboratory guidelines. Do not self-medicate, and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.

Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample for this test is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.

What does Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel measure?

Contains 6 tests

The Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel measures specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against a range of inhaled organic antigens. High IgG levels against fungi like Penicillium, Cladosporium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus, or against bird proteins, show that your immune system has been exposed to these allergens and may be causing lung inflammation. In asymptomatic individuals  with antigen exposure, the presence of elevated specific IgG antibodies only indicates exposure-induced sensitization and not a disease. These results help doctors differentiate hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) from other lung problems like asthma, COPD, or lung infections. Early detection and avoidance of the triggering antigen can help reduce lung inflammation and prevent permanent lung damage.

FAQs related to Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel

The Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel is a group of blood tests that detect specific IgG antibodies to various environmental antigens like mold spores and bird proteins. It helps find immune reactions that might be causing lung problems from repeated exposure.
You may need this test if you have symptoms like a long-lasting cough, trouble breathing, fatigue, or unexplained lung inflammation. This is particularly crucial if you are often around mold, dust, or birds.
No, fasting is not required for the Hypersensitive Pneumonitis Panel.
A blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm. The sample is then tested in the lab to measure specific IgG antibody levels against the listed allergens.
High IgG levels mean you’ve been exposed to the tested antigen before, possibly repeatedly. This may show an ongoing immune response that can be linked to hypersensitive pneumonitis. Results are interpreted along with symptoms and imaging.
HP is a lung condition caused by the immune system reacting to allergens like mold, dust, or bird proteins. It inflames the tiny air sacs in the lungs, which can make breathing difficult and cause lung damage over time.
HP happens after repeated exposure to airborne triggers like mold spores, bird droppings, animal proteins, or organic dust. Common sources include farms, handling birds, moldy homes, or workplaces like sawmills and greenhouses.
No. HP may have similar symptoms, but it is different. HP is caused by the immune system reacting to allergens and causing lung inflammation, while asthma and COPD are chronic airway diseases with different causes. Diagnosis needs a doctor’s evaluation, imaging, and lab tests.
