IGF-1 Somatomedin C
Understanding IGF-1 Somatomedin C
What is IGF-1 Somatomedin C?
The IGF-1 Somatomedin C test measures the amount of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) in your blood and is commonly used in the evaluation of growth abnormalities, especially in children. It helps to diagnose the cause of short stature or other growth-related issues. Furthermore, the IGF-1 test can also be used to assess pituitary function. The IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1) or Somatomedin C is a hormone that plays a crucial role in the regulation of growth and development. It is primarily produced in the liver in response to growth hormone (GH) stimulation.
This test can be performed when a child has slow growth, short stature, delayed puberty, excessive growth, or an overly large head. In adults, it can be performed in cases of low bone density, reduced muscle strength, and increased lipids that suggest insufficient GH and IGF-1 production. It should be noted that GH levels in the blood keep fluctuating throughout the day depending on your diet and activity level. However, IGF-1 levels remain stable.
What is IGF-1 Somatomedin C used for?
- To help diagnose growth hormone (GH) deficiency, when symptoms of growth deficiency and delayed development appear in children
- To help diagnose the conditions in children showing symptoms of gigantism and in adults showing symptoms of acromegaly
- To monitor treatment by growth hormone therapy
- To evaluate pituitary function
- When signs of reduced bone density and muscle strength appear in adults
