Understanding Ultrasound Lower Abdomen

What is Ultrasound Lower Abdomen?

The Ultrasound (USG) Lower Abdomen is a safe, noninvasive, painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the organs and structures in the lower abdominal area. It helps diagnose conditions affecting the bladder, reproductive organs, kidneys, and other structures.

The Ultrasound Lower Abdomen test creates real-time images of the internal organs in the lower abdominal region. This includes the bladder, kidneys, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, prostate, and other structures. It can show the size, structure, and movement of the internal organs, as well as blood flowing through the blood vessels inside the lower abdominal area. The ultrasound machine sends sound waves into the abdomen, and the resulting images are recorded on a computer.

The Ultrasound Lower Abdomen test is recommended when there are symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, swelling, abnormal bleeding, or urinary issues. It helps diagnose conditions like urinary tract infections, kidney stones, ovarian cysts, fibroids, or prostate problems. It may also be used to monitor the reproductive organs during pregnancy or identify the cause of unexplained symptoms like pelvic pain, edema, bleeding, etc. in the lower abdominal region.

The Ultrasound Lower Abdomen test is a safer alternative as compared to other imaging tests, such as X-rays or Computed Tomography (CT) scans, because it does not use ionizing radiation or require oral contrast agents.

For this test, the individual will have to fast overnight (8-12 hrs) and have a full bladder to ensure clear images of the organs and structures inside the abdomen. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. The individual may need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined.

Interpretation of test results requires expert guidance. Therefore, do not self-medicate solely based on these test results. Always consult the doctor for a proper understanding of the test results. The Ultrasound Lower Abdomen helps doctors make informed decisions about further treatment or lifestyle recommendations.

It provides real-time images that help identify abnormalities such as cysts, tumors, or signs of infection.
