Understanding Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP

What is Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP?

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP is a specialized allergy test that evaluates your Total IgE (antibodies produced by the immune system in response to allergens) as well as specific IgE against 10 distinct non-vegetarian food allergens using the ImmunoCAP technique. Based on the results the source of allergy/allergies is determined and the course of treatment is decided accordingly.

Food allergy occurs when your body has an immune response to certain foods. The immune system mistakenly identifies a food or a particular ingredient as harmful (allergen) and produces an inappropriate response by producing antibodies (specific proteins) called Immunoglobulin E (IgE).

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP is a comprehensive allergy panel that includes the Total IgE test, a blood test used to measure the total IgE levels in the blood. In addition, this test also detects the presence of specific IgE antibodies to a wide range of food allergens, particularly non-vegetarian food sources such as beef, pork, chicken, egg, and fish that can trigger allergies.

Your doctor may suggest the Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP if you exhibit symptoms associated with food allergy such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin rashes, hives, etc. Doctors may also perform this test if there are no specific symptoms and cause of the allergy is not clear. Allergen detection through this panel will help your doctor guide appropriate management and treatment decisions and prevent severe complications.

Generally, no special preparation is required for the Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP. However, inform your doctor about any medications (such as antihistamines) you are taking, as they might influence your test results.

Reference ranges may vary based on factors such as age, medical history, etc. Moreover, results from different labs may vary based on differences in kits and techniques used for testing, and the source & quality of the allergen used in different kits. Therefore, test results obtained with different techniques are not interchangeable. Narrate your complete medical history including any known allergies, and symptoms that can impact test interpretations to help the doctor correlate your laboratory and clinical findings and formulate a robust treatment plan.

What is Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP used for?

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP is done:

  • If you experience allergy symptoms such as itchy or watery eyes, swelling, shortness of breath, skin rash, congestion, hives, diarrhea, eczema, or sneezing after consuming any non-vegetarian food product.
  • To track and monitor treatment progress and effectiveness.
  • In individuals with a family history of allergies.

What does Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP measure?

Contains 11 tests

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP offers 11 test parameters that help examine Total IgE and 10 different non-vegetarian food allergens, such as pork, beef, various species of fish, chicken, egg, etc. These tests help your doctor develop a treatment plan to address serious health challenges your body may face.

Food allergy is an immune system reaction that happens soon after eating a certain food. Even a small amount of allergy-causing food can trigger symptoms such as digestive problems, nausea, diarrhea, hives, swollen airways, etc. If not taken seriously, sometimes they can be life-threatening. Therefore, identifying these substances and taking timely precautions and treatment is essential to avoid severe complications.

Total IgE

Immunoglobulins are antibodies (proteins) produced by plasma cells (specific immune cells) when the body recognizes bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms, or any other unknown substances as harmful foreign antigens (allergy-causing substances or allergens) to the immune system. There are five types of immunoglobulins: IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, and IgE.

Unlike other antibodies, IgE is primarily associated with immune responses to allergenic substances, such as plant pollen, latex, pet dander, mold, eggs, peanuts, bee venom, and strawberries. Typically, IgE is present in tiny amounts in the blood. When the immune system encounters an allergen, it triggers the production of IgE antibodies. The Total IgE test measures the concentration of these IgE antibodies in the blood, providing insights into the presence and severity of allergies.

Answers to Patient Concerns & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP

Frequently Asked Questions about Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP

Q. Why is the Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP important?

This test is crucial for identifying potential allergies after consuming non-vegetarian food products. Identifying the specific allergens that trigger these reactions can help manage symptoms and prevent serious complications.

Q. When should I get tested for the Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP?

You may need an Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP if you exhibit symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, stuffy and runny nose, hives (rashes with raised red patches), breath shortness, coughing, wheezing, vomiting, etc., after consuming certain food items that are covered in this allergy testing panel.

Q. What is the role of IgE in various allergies?

IgE is a type of antibody (specific protein) that the immune system produces in response to allergens. In people with different types of allergies, the immune system mistakenly identifies certain foods as harmful and produces IgE antibodies to fight them. These antibodies can trigger various allergy symptoms.

Q. What do the Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel, ImmunoCAP test results mean?

A high Total IgE level indicates an allergy. However, high Total IgE may also be raised in other conditions, such as parasitic infections. A normal or negative result means you do not have an allergy. However, it is possible to have negative results even if you are allergic to a substance. It is, therefore, crucial to consult a doctor or an allergy specialist for result interpretation. Allergen-specific IgE by ImmunoCAP indicates a person’s level of sensitization to a specific allergen( here Non-vegetarian food) and helps detect an allergy in relation to the individual’s history and clinical symptoms.

Q. What is the ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Blood Test?

ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Blood Test is a specialized test that can quantitatively and accurately identify specific allergen sensitivities, i.e., identify an allergy and determine the allergen (allergy-causing substance) in people with a confirmed allergy.

Q. What do ImmunoCAP Specific IgE test results mean?

ImmunoCAP blood test results will indicate whether the patient is sensitized (i.e., has IgE antibodies) to specific allergens. However, sensitization to specific allergens does not always indicate a clinical allergy, as sensitization does not always result in symptoms. Results are reported in the amount of IgE antibodies for a specific allergen in kilounits of allergen per liter of blood. A higher level means more likelihood of involvement of that allergen in causing an allergic reaction. Therefore, each patient’s history must be considered before diagnosing an allergy.

Q. What is allergy?

Allergy is a common and painful condition that can occur when your body's immune system reacts adversely to certain foreign substances it perceives as a threat. To fight this perceived threat and protect the body, the immune system produces certain chemicals and antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the body, which give rise to the symptoms.

Q. What are allergens?

Allergens are harmful substances that cause an allergic reaction in the body by releasing chemicals and antibodies. These allergies can cause common symptoms ranging from sneezing and blocked nose to a life-threatening complication called anaphylactic shock.
